Kittur Chennamma the Queen of Kittur, a princely state in Karnataka was the first Indian female ruler to lead an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in the 1820s. After fighting fiercely for many months, her resistance ended with her arrest. She was ultimately captured and imprisoned where she died under captivity.

Pingali Venkayya – the designer of the tricolor and a fervent freedom fighter.

Pingali Venkayya was the designer of the tricolor and a fervent freedom fighter. An authority in agriculture and geology, he was also an educationist. Venkayya met Mahatma Gandhi during the Anglo-Boer war in Africa. A postage stamp was issued to commemorate Pingali Venkayya in 2009.

Sangolli Rayanna – army chief of the Kingdom of Kittur

Sangolli Rayanna
A remarkable warrior from Karnataka, Rayanna was born on 15 August 1798. As the army chief of the Kingdom of Kittur, he fought the British East India Company until his last breath. He mobilized local people and started a guerilla type war against the British. Rayanna was executed by hanging to death from a Banyan tree.

Subramania Bharati
A writer, poet, journalist, Indian independence activist and social reformer, Chinnaswami Subramania Bharathi was popularly known as “Mahakavi Bharathi”. He was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry where he wrote numerous works of fiery songs kindling patriotism and nationalism during the Indian Independence movement. After being badly affected by the imprisonments by the British, Subramania Bharati died in 1920.

Veerapandiya Kattabomman – the military governor of Panchalankurichi

Veerapandiya Kattabomman
During the 1770s Veerapandiyan was the military governor of Panchalankurichi. Refusing the sovereignty of British East India Company, he fought bravely against them. Being betrayed, He was captured by the British and hanged publicly.
